An 8-year-old Maryland boy is in critical condition after being rescued from a cruise ship pool off the coast of New Jersey, according to the New York Police Department.
The department received a 911 call at about 7:54 p.m. Thursday from aboard the Royal Caribbean's Anthem of the Seas, police said. The boy had fallen into a pool on the ship and was under water for an undetermined amount of time.
The police department's aviation unit responded to the vessel and flew the child to an area hospital where he is listed in critical condition. The police department did not release additional details about where in Maryland the boy is from.
A Royal Caribbean spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Friday morning.
Police said the cruise ship departed from Bayonne, New Jersey and was traveling to Bermuda.
