It won't have the glitter of the Republican and Democratic presidential conventions, but Baltimore will nevertheless get a piece of the 2012 nomination action as the national Green Party opens a three-day convention here today to pick a presidential candidate.
Hundreds of delegates as well as Green Party candidates from across the country are expected to arrive today for the event, which will take place at the University of Baltimore and the Holiday Inn on West Lombard Street. The actual presidential nomination will take place Saturday.
Physician Jill Stein is the presumptive presidential nominee but actress Roseanne Barr, also a candidate, has received significant attention outside party circles.
The convention comes as third party candidates, including Greens, have struggled to get on the ballot in Maryland. The state Green and Libertarian parties have until August 6 to collect the 10,000 signatures needed to guarantee a spot on the ballot for the their presidential and congressional candidates.
The 2008 Green Party convention was held in Chicago.
