Mt. Hebron swimming rolls to fourth straight Howard County Invitational title

For the fourth straight year, Mt. Hebron was the top team finisher at the 41st annual Howard County Invitational swim meet held at Howard Community College.

The Vikings scored a meet-best 815 points to easily outdistance second-place Centennial (494 points) and third-place Atholton (464.5) on Sunday, April 15. The meet, which was sponsored by the Columbia Clippers swim team, was open to all Howard County public high school students and featured 146 swimmers that competed between a total of 17 events.

There were three female swimmers — Howard’s Morgan Oehler, Reservoir’s Savannah Onyenorah and Reservoir’s Claire O’Shaughnessy — and three male swimmers — Wilde Lake’s Calvin Tuttle, Mt. Hebron’s Will Hoogenboom and Atholton’s Zichao Liang — who all finished with the maximum 40 points. An event winner is awarded 20 points, with swimmers not allowed to compete in more than two events.

Of the participants, there were six graduating seniors that have committed to continue with varsity swimming in college. They are: Oehler (University of Maine), Tuttle (Bates), Reservoir’s Henry Buda (Worcester Polytechnic Institute), Mt. Hebron’s Shannon Cucchiaro (St. Olaf College), Oakland Mills’ Kayla May (Rider University) and Mt. Hebron’s Brendan Rice (Marist College).

A donation was made to the after-prom parties for all the schools represented at the meet.
