Skid Loader Rodeo wraps up opening weekend at Howard County Fair

After days of using their skid loaders to prepare the Howard County Fairgrounds for its signature event, contractors got to have a little fun with their machinery.

The seventh annual Skid Loader Rodeo closed out the opening weekend of the Howard County Fair Sunday night. Contestants competed in a variety of events, including hefting giant tires, maneuvering a figure eight and picking up a basketball off of an orange cone.

"It started as an event where we just wanted something different for the fair," said Justin Brendel, president of Lisbon-based Level Land Inc. excavating company. "There's a lot of contractors... something fun for us to come out and do after we were done working."

Londell Luther took first place in the competition, which earned him a trophy and a week-long rental of a skid loader from Metro Bobcat of Gaithursburg.

"It's very exciting, I love to participate in stuff, I love to compete," said Luther. "I hope they make more competitions."
