Third teen arrested in fatal shooting in Laurel

A third teenager has been charged as an adult with murder and assault in the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Xavier Young Oct. 28 in Laurel.

Howard County police said Melvin Jacome, 15, of Hyattsville, was arrested Thursday for his involvement in the drug deal behind the Whiskey Bottom Shopping Center in the 9000 block of North Laurel Road, where Young, of Odenton, was shot in the head. Young died Oct. 30 at Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Police arrested Jacome in Prince George’s County without incident and he is currently being held without bond at the Howard County Detention Center.

Police earlier this week arrested Laurel residents Luis Gerardo Ordonez, 19, and Francisco J. Rodriguez, 16, and charged them as adults with murder, assault, reckless endangerment and firearms violations.

According to charging documents, five juveniles, including Young, arranged a drug deal with Jacome, Ordonez and Rodriguez. The three teens left the area when they saw one of the juveniles, who was conducting the deal, didn’t come alone as requested.

A single gunshot was fired from Ordonez’s black Nissan Altima while driving out of the area, hitting Young as the juveniles ran away.

Carol Hanson is listed as the assistant public defender for Ordonez and Rodriguez, and no attorney was listed for Jacome on Maryland Judiciary case search. Hanson could not be reached for comment.
