Social media leads to Laurel man's arrest in attempted ATM thefts

Howard County police have found and charged a Laurel man in connection to several attempted ATM thefts.

Through the powers of social media, Howard County police have found and charged a Laurel man in connection to several attempted ATM thefts throughout the county after numerous tips from the public.

Scott Joseph Costa, 26, was charged with three counts of attempted theft, three counts of malicious destruction of property, burglary and attempted burglary.

According to spokeswoman Sherry Llewellyn, police posted ATM surveillance photos of Costa on both Facebook and Twitter, following their investigation on Nov. 21.

Police said their investigation began at a damaged ATM at the Bank of America in the 8600 block of Washington Boulevard in Jessup. Shortly after, police said, they found pry marks on the doors of AMA Systems in the 8100 block of Lark Brown Road in Elkridge as well as another damaged ATM at the Bank of America in the 8800 block of Centre Park Drive in Columbia.

While detectives are investigating Costa's involvement in similar cases, police stated, several tips from residents led to his arrest at his home in Laurel.

Costa was taken to the county jail, and he was later released on $15,000 bail.
