Howard motorcycle accident sends one to shock trauma

A collision between a car and a motorcycle sent the motorcyclist to shock trauma in critical condition Sunday, Howard County police said.

Traffic Enforcement is investigating the incident, which occurred at approximately 2:39 p.m. Sunday, May 12, on Frederick Road just east of St. John's Lane in Ellicott City.

According to police, Charles Earnest Runkles, 73, of the 300 block of Whitfield Road in Catonsville, was attempting to exit a business complex onto Frederick Road. Police said Runkles pulled out into the path of Mark Allan Kohlhepp, 42, of the 3800 block of Akers Drive in Mount Airy, who was on a 2007 Harley Davidson FLH motorcycle.

Kohlhepp collided with the left front corner of Runkles' car, and was transported by Maryland State Police Medevac to shock trauma. Neither Runkles nor his passenger, Linda Thompson Runkles, 73, was injured.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed Runkles' failure to yield right of way as the primary cause of the accident.
