Columbia man arrested in alleged sexual assault of 86-year-old woman

A Columbia man has been charged in connection with the alleged kidnapping and sexual assault of an 86-year-old woman in a Columbia woods over the weekend, Howard County police said Thursday.

Michael Lawrence Pinkney, 54, of the 6500 block of Overheart Lane, has been charged with eight counts of sex offenses, an assault charge and a kidnapping charge in connection with the June 15 incident, police said.

Pinkney is being held at Howard County Detention Center without bond.

According to police, the woman was waiting at a bus stop about 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, near the 7000 block of Cradlerock Way when a man approached her and asked her if she wanted a ride.

The man then allegedly drove her to a vacant office parking lot near the 10600 block of Little Patuxent Parkway, took her into the woods, and sexually assaulted her for two hours, police said.

The woman then walked to a nearby gas station, where a patron called police, according to police.

Police said Pinkney was identified as a suspect through available surveillance video from the scene, and that they used the video to identify a suspect vehicle -- a black BMW convertible. The video showed a car matching Pinkney's BMW drive to the area of the alleged assault with a passenger, and then leave two hours later without one, police said.

Police said they could not identify the license plate from the video, but that "an extensive search" of a vehicle matching the description turned up a car registered to Pinkney.

Police said additional evidence linked Pinkney to the alleged crime, and that an arrest warrant was served on his home Thursday morning.
