An 18-year-old from Elkridge died after he lost control of his car and struck a tree in Columbia Saturday night, Howard County police said.

Police identified the victim on Sunday as Sahan Tilaka Kalegana Koralage. Police said he was driving a 2012 Honda Civic west on Governor Warfield Parkway when he lost control, drove off the road and struck a tree. The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. near Little Patuxent Parkway.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe excessive speed may have contributed to the collision. The victim was also not wearing a seat belt, police said.

He was a 2015 graduate of Long Reach High School in Columbia, according to a commencement program.

Earlier versions misidentified the victim's gender. The Sun regrets the error.
