Laurel Police charge two in kidnapping, home invasion

What began as a traffic stop by Laurel police early Tuesday resulted in the arrest of two men in connection with a home invasion and kidnapping.

Donte Powell, 27, of Washington, and Douglas Mention, 26, of South Carolina, are charged with armed robbery, kidnapping and weapons charges in connection with the Feb. 4 incident.

According to police, at about 1:16 a.m. an officer observed a car without its headlights on traveling the wrong way down a one-way street in the 700 block of Fifth Street. Police said the officer attempted to pull the car over and the car made an illegal turn on Route 198 and continued to drive on the wrong side of the road.

At the intersection of Route 1, the car slowed and a naked man fled the vehicle, police said. The chase continued onto Route 1 until the car crashed into three parked cars at the Car America Dealership, located in the 10000 block of North Washington Boulevard in North Laurel, police said.

The car came to rest upside down, and both occupants were injured, police said. One was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and a second was taken to Laurel Regional Hospital. A loaded .40-caliber handgun was recovered from the vehicle, police said.

While officers pursued the car, police said additional officers caught up with the naked man and discovered he was a victim of a kidnapping and armed robbery, police said.

Police said they then charged the two men in the car, identified as Powell and Mention.
