The Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Tea and the Arts take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at 9650 Muirkirk Road in Laurel. The festival will feature live music, along with vendors offering herbs, arts, handmade baskets, garden accessories, jewelry and more. Tea and scones can be enjoyed in the mansion. Free. 'The Paper Show'

An exhibition of works by Lisa Hillring, Virginia Rose Kane and Leora "Lee" Smith that explore the use of paper runs through Monday, May 28, in Tai Sophia Institute's Himmelfarb Gallery, 7750 Montpelier Road in Laurel. The artists incorporate the techniques of handmade paper, cut paper, collage and woven paper. Hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Learn to play chess

Art exhibit

"And They're Off!: 100 Years at Laurel Park" Centennial exhibit at the Laurel Museum explores the history and racing highlights at Laurel Park and the track's impact on the community. Fun at the library

A "Picture Book Parade!" for children ages 2-5 with an adult will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursdays at the Savage branch of the Howard County Library. Pajama Time, when children may wear pajamas and bring teddy bears and blankets, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesdays. The branch is at 9525 Durness Lane in Laurel. Information: 410-880-5980.
