A 20-year-old Ellicott City man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Friday for robbing a Ledo Pizza restaurant last year while on pretrial release for sexual assault.
Jamal Veraughn Brown was sentenced in Howard County Circuit Court to 15 years for the March 2009 armed robbery of the restaurant in Ellicott City.
Brown, of the 3500 block of Court House Drive, will serve a mandatory five years for possession of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime, and at least half of the sentence for the armed robbery. He will also have to serve at least half of a 10-year sentence for third-degree sexual assault.
Brown was four months past his 18th birthday when he committed the sexual assault in July 2008, and was released a month later while he awaited trial. He had been charged with first- and second--degree rape, but was found guilty of first- and second-degree assault.
After new evidence came to light and Brown was about to be retried, he pleaded guilty to third-degree sexual assault
Omar Black of Annapolis, with whom Brown robbed the pizza restaurant, was sentenced last year to 18 months.
According to prosecutors, Brown was arrested in September 2008 in Anne Arundel County, after being released from jail, for not obeying a police officer who had seen Brown running away from the scene of a fight at a high school. He received probation.
