Police: Woman struck, killed while trying to cross I-70 near Howard/Carroll line after crashing car

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of a woman who they said was fatally struck Friday evening as she attempted to cross Interstate-70 near the Howard County and Carroll County line in Mount Airy.

Police say a woman was driving eastbound in a white Volvo at about 6:45 p.m. on I-70 when she crashed for unknown reasons into the guard wires in the median.

She got out of her car on the passenger side and attempted to cross the eastbound part of the highway and was struck by another vehicle, police said.

She was declared dead at the scene by personnel with the Howard County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle remained at the scene.

The eastbound side of the interstate was partially closed with the aid of the Maryland State Highway Administration as the authorities responded to the scene.

Police said the woman’s name is being withheld pending family notification.
