One dead, two injured in Howard County crash

One man was killed and two people injured in a Saturday afternoon car crash on U.S. Route 1 in Elkridge, Howard County police reported.

Around 2:10 p.m., police reported, a car heading south on U.S. 1 just south of Brumbaugh Street collided with another car that had pulled into the southbound lanes while attempting a left turn onto northbound U.S. 1.

The driver of the car attempting the turn, 55-year-old William John McNamara of Elkridge, was taken to St. Agnes Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The car’s passenger, a 54-year-old Elkridge resident, was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center and is in critical condition, police said.

The driver and sole occupant of the other car, a 24-year-old Columbia resident, also was taken to shock trauma, where she is in stable condition, police said.

Police said they believe the car making the turn failed to yield the right of way. An investigation is ongoing, police said.
