87-year-old man killed in single-vehicle crash in Ellicott City

An 87-year-old man was killed Saturday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash in Howard County, county police said.

Harold Paul Mazmanian was pronounced dead at the scene. According to police, his 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck was traveling eastbound on Route 99, near Old Saint Johns Lane in Ellicott City, at about 1:45 p.m. when it left the road and struck a tree.

County police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the primary cause of the collision was that Mazmanian, of the 2500 block of Melba Road, failed to reduce speed in the rainy conditions. Route 99 was closed for more than two hours as police investigated.
