Fall Extravaganza welcomes community to Holy Communion church

A small church is making big plans to welcome the fall season on Saturday, Sept. 28 for Fallston families and their neighbors throughout the county.

Members of Holy Communion Lutheran Church are busy organizing their first Fall Extravaganza to help bring families in the community together by providing fun and fellowship for all, silent auctions, raffles and pit beef for the adults, and free games, pony rides, food and prizes for kids. The event happens just six days after the official start of fall, the autumnal equinox, when day and night are equal.

Three church members, Adrienne Smith of Fallston, Penny Sadler-Vocke of Bel Air and Jan Warren of Havre de Grace, head the Extravaganza planning committee. For weeks they have been knocking on doors of local businesses, getting help providing many free activities for the children: pony rides, moon bounce, games with prizes, face painting, scarecrow making, hot dogs, popcorn and many surprises.

While the children are being fed and entertained, there will be plenty of activities for the grownups, Warren noted.

"There will be pit beef cooked on the spot, Orioles and Ravens memorabilia, crafts, a quilt raffle, a bake sale, a silent auction, pre-read books and gently used purses for sale," she said. "And I guess what you could only call 'white elephants.'"

"The support from the business community has been wonderful," Smith said. "Of course, they realize we will be giving back to the community by putting any proceeds from this event into a fund we call HCLC CARES."

"CARES" stands for Community Assistance Reserve for Emergency Services, she explained. Holy Communion has always tried to assist families in Harford County, particularly those in the Fallston/Bel Air area, who temporarily need food or help paying heating bills, hospital bills, rent or other unexpected emergencies. "Unfortunately, we do not always have the resources when the need arises. We hope the Fall Extravaganza will help us build up this fund for winter," she said. "That's what fall is about, isn't it? Stocking up for winter."

HCLC's Fall Extravaganza will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 on the church grounds, 621 Old Fallston Road—just off Mountain Road—in Fallston. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 29, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
