A fire late Tuesday evening extensively damaged a home near Aberdeen.

Firefighters responded to the 1100 block of Montreal Drive for a fire in a split level structure, according to Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association spokesman Rich Gardiner.

The fire, off Stepney Road west of Aberdeen, was reported about 5:10, as a house fire with rescue, according to Harford County emergency radio dispatches.

It took the 30 firefighters who responded 15 minutes to control the blaze, which was discovered by the owner, Jean J. Thompson, according to a notice of investigation from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

The brick front, wood frame dwelling suffered considerable flame and smoke damage, much of it to the rear of the house.

The accidental fire started on the back deck when the propane tank for the gas grill leaked and was ignited by a nearby electrical source, according to the notice of investigation.

Five people were home and escaped safely after the fire was discovered, according to the fire marshal's office.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office was called to assist at the scene, according to the fire marshal's office, which said the owner's son attempted to re-enter the home at one point, disrupting firefighters, but backed down after being warned.

Aberdeen Fire Company and Level Volunteer Fire Company sent personnel and equipment to the scene.

The estimated loss of structure is $80,000 and $25,000 in contents, according to the notice of investigation.

The Red Cross is assisting the family.
