The fight against cancer is a never-ending battle.
And it takes a never-ending stream of money to keep it going. Be it large or small, every amount that goes toward the fight is important. When a bunch of bands paraded on stage at Cedar Lane Regional Park last Thursday, it was young people taking up arms in the war against the dreaded disease. The All For One Concert was the brainchild of a couple of brainiacs, whose lives, as so many of ours have been touched by cancer. The theme of the event was to raise money to help achieve a cancer free future.
Molleshere "Molly" Karna and Kalliopi "Kalli" Drakos, two recent graduates of the Math and Science Academy in Aberdeen, planned the event, they said, because so many people have been affected by cancer. Molly and Kalli said they each have a grandmother with cancer. They held their first anti-cancer concert a year ago with three bands performing and charged $5 head to raise money for their team in the Relay For Life, a major American Cancer Society fundraiser.
That effort raised $500 and made the two young women think of ways, other than going door to door, to raise money, Kalli said. This year, there were 27 bands and it cost $10 per person to attend.
"It's a creative way to raise money," she said, "and have a great time."
Relay For Life events have always had strong participation from young people. Concerts are another a great way to energize younger folks and get them on the path to keeping up the good fight. "Who doesn't want to support that?" a mother of one of the musicians asked rhetorically during the concert about the American Cancer Society and the fight against cancer. No one, we suspect, would be anything other than supportive of efforts to make cancer vanish.
"It's definitely an easy cause to advocate for," Kalli said, with Molly adding, "but it's also a really sincere one." It sure is and we applaud Molly, Kalli and everyone who helped the All For One Concert raise money. We also look forward to next year's fundraiser being even more successful.
