Maryland State Police arrested a motorist who fled the scene of a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 95 in Harford County Thursday night only to be apprehended while driving through traffic stalled by emergency road repair, authorities said.
Officers responding to a report of an accident on southbound I-95, south of Route 24, discovered a Chevrolet pickup truck had struck a Buick vehicle carrying two people, one of whom was pregnant. The two victims were transported to Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital, said authorities, who added that the their injuries were not life threatening.
Officers obtained a description of the Chevrolet and issued a lookout. The vehicle was spotted by a state trooper positioned at a Maryland Transportation Authority roadwork scene south of the incident, where traffic had been stopped.
The motorist was also slowed by damage to the vehicle, authorities said.
The driver, Bryan C. Kafka, 25, of Middle River, charged with driving under the influence, driving on a suspended license, failure to remain at the scene of a personal injury crash, and reckless driving.
Authorities said he was transported to the Harford County Interagency Processing Center for an appearance before a court commissioner.
