Fallston junior William Creery put himself in title contention Tuesday at the second round of the Maryland State Golf Tournament in Collega Park.

Creery shot a solid round of 74, to place him just two strokes back of leader Ryan Stankewicz of South Carroll in the Class 1A-2A standings. The two are in the same foursome for today’s (Wednesday) final round along with Kevin Hickey (75, River Hill) and Caleb Taylor (76, Glenelg).

“Winds were down today, but it was very cool this morning and greens were exceptionally quick, making scoring difficult, particularly early in the round,” Cougars coach Steve Mull said about Tuesday’s course conditions at the University of Maryland Golf Course.

Creery round started with a 41 on the front, but he rebounded well on the back 9 with a 3-under 33.

Creery‘s teammate, Zach Barkhorn, wasn’t so fortunate. He shot a disappointing round of 110.

Three Huskies advance

Michael Montgomery, Mitchell Walz and Paula Moon of Patterson Mill all advanced from Tuesday’s play as well.

Montgomery led the scoring with 82, while Moon shot 84 and Walz, 85.

The Huskies fourth team player, Tyler Jessup, shot 92. The Huskies shot a team total of 343, just four strokes off the final team advancement spot.
