Aberdeen sees 4th straight win slip away in ninth inning

The Aberdeen IronBirds came within three outs of winning a fourth straight game Saturday night, but Tri-City scored a pair of runs late to win, 5-4, in a New York-Penn League game played in Troy, NY.

Aberdeen, which was shut out for six innings, scored a single run in the seventh and three more in the eighth to take a 4-3 lead into the ninth.

The ValleyCats put together three singles and a hit batter off IronBirds reliever Juan Echevarria (0-2) to produce the winning runs.

Cody Roberts hit his first home run to get the ‘Birds on the scoreboard in the seventh and in the eighth, Robert Neustrom drove in a run with fielder’s choice and Willy Yahn drove in a pair with a single.

Aberdeen (11-11) had just four hits. Nick Horvath and Alexis Torres each had hits.

Matthew Hammonds started and lasted 3.2 innings. He allowed five hits, two runs, and three walks while striking out four.

Ruben Garcia pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two hits, a walk and a run, while striking out two.
