Girls lacrosse teams ready for 2019 season

Harford County’s high school girls lacrosse teams have been practicing in efforts to be ready for the next week’s season openers. Here is a look at the teams.

Aberdeen

Head coach: Erin Steelman (third season)

2018 record: 16-4

Top returning players: Emma Cook, Junior (Att); Nia Lark, Senior (Def); Taylor Miller, Senior (GK); Layla Gagne, Junior (Att/Mid)

Key new players: Cynthia Batres, Junior (Attt); Jasmine Yaque, Junior (Def); Tionna Harris, Senior (Def); Lily Proctor, Junior (Mid)

Outlook: This season the Aberdeen girl's lacrosse team is expecting to grow their program by developing new players with the help of experienced returners Gagne, Cook, Miller and Lark. Top players to watch this season will be Miller, with a commitment to play goalie at West Point University and attacker Cook (20 goals) who was Aberdeen’s top scorer in 2018. Aberdeen is ready to face experienced teams such as North Harford and Patterson Mill who they foresee to be the top teams in the county.

Bel Air

Head coach: Kristen Barry (fifth season)

2018 record: 15-3

Top returning players: Katie McGrain, Senior (Def/Mid); Grace Wehland, Senior (Mid); Maggi Hall, Junior (Att); Anna McQuay, Junior (Att/Mid); Jay Harden, Junior (Def); Riley Patrick, Junior (GK)

Key new players: Lauren Puntanen, Junior (Def); Kate Davie, Sophomore (Def); Logan Cook, Freshman (Att)

Outlook: After losing a big senior class, the Bobcats look to retool and continue the successes of last season. The team is scrappy and motivated, ready to leave their mark and prove the doubters wrong.

C. Milton Wright

Head coach: Faye Brust (second season)

2018 record: 8-6

Top returning players: Taylor Marchetti, Senior (Mid); Haley Cummins, Junior (Mid); Aubrey Hoover, Senior (Mid); Samantha Marzullo, Senior (Def); Courtney Frank, Junior (Def); Claire Mottley, Senior (Def); Cassidy Hoover, Senior (Def)

Key new players: Kaitlyn Bajkowski, Sophomore (Mid); Madison Remeto, Sophomore (Att); Sawyer Graham, Sophomore (GK)

Outlook: “We graduated a good amount of seniors, but we have a talented group ready to step in and pick up right where we left off last year. Our team has already developed a strong bond that will definitely translate to success on the field,” Mustangs coach Brust said. “The seniors are taking the lead in practice and setting the right tone to help the team not only prepare for games, but pave the road to the state championship. We are all excited for this season and the future of C. Milton Wright women's lacrosse.”

Edgewood

Head coach: Matt Rankin (second season)

Fallston

Head coach: Maddie Palko (first season)

2018 record: 9-8

Top returning players: Rebekah Taylor, Senior (Def); Logan Ward, Junior (Midf); Lauren Gabranski, Junior (GK); Devin Makfinsky, Senior (Def); Rachel Solak, Senior (Att); Taylor Aumiller, Senior (Att)

Key new players: Juliana Williams, Freshman (Mid); Delaney Nicolaus, Freshman (Mid); Abby Kaminkow, Sophomore (Mid); Megan Dudick, Junior (Att); Allie Holt, Junior (Att)

Outlook: “We're really pleased with what we have seen during tryouts and we're excited with the amount of potential this team has. In all areas of the field we have key returners coming back and they offer us some solid, experienced leadership,” Cougars first year coach Palko said. “We've also added some strong players to our roster and our starting lineup. We are looking forward to see how the veterans gel with the new players and we are excited to see who steps up. I'm really looking forward to coaching this group of girls.”

Harford Tech

Head coach: Katie Freeman (first season)

2018 record: 5-9

Top returning players: Jamie Gorham, Senior (Att); Cassidy Poole, Junior (Att); Claire Ashburn, Junior (Att); Mackenzie Gallery, Senior (Mid); Allison Storm, Junior (Mid); Maddie Re, Senior (Def); Gracie Chaires, Senior (Def); Kayla Jones, Senior (Def); Samantha Peters, Junior (GK)

Key new players: Molly Re, Freshman (Mid); Mackenzie Bianchi, Junior (GK)

Outlook: “We have nine returning starters from last years team, which ended the season with a 5-9 record and a loss to Fallston in the region playoff finals. Many of the returning starters, which includes four seniors, four juniors and one sophomore, have been on the varsity team since their freshman year,” Cobras coach Freeman said. “This gives us a lot of experience throughout the roster. We also have several new additions to the team who we expect to make an immediate impact.” Tech play in the UCBAC Chesapeake division which is very competitive. “We hope that the depth of experience and strong leadership we have on this team will help us to improve upon the results of last season,” Freeman said.

Havre de Grace

Head Coach: Mel Rimel-Holloway (first season)

2018 record: N/A

Top returning players: Shawnee Mahan, Senior (Mid); Maggie Kilmon, Sophomore (Mid); Alana Nye, Sophomore (GK)

Key new players: Gia Gasdia, Freshman (Mid); Ali James, Freshman (Mid); Haley Sullivan, Freshman (Att); Paige Sullivan, Freshman (Def)

Outlook: “We are very excited for the 2019 lacrosse season. We are welcoming a new coaching staff with lots of enthusiasm. Our team spirits are high and we have a group of hardworking and dedicated girls,” Warriors coach Rimel-Holloway (two years assistant). “Our team is looking forward to competitive competition this year. We hope our players have a successful season despite wins or loses.”

John Carroll

Head coach: Abbey Swift (fifth season)

2018 record: 9-10

Top returning players: Emily Sterling, Senior (GK); Georgia Ceanfaglione, Senior (Def); Maddy Sterling, Sophomore (Mid); Erin Scannell, Senior (Mid); Katie Hormes, Senior (Mid); Ellie Hollin, Sophomore (Mid)

Key new players: “Only brought on six new players for this year, four of which are freshmen and then one sophomore and one junior,” Patriots coach Swift said.

Outlook: “Graduated just two seniors from last year, so looking forward to watching our current seniors take control,” Swift said. Following the seniors are a very talented group of underclassmen, where each grade brings its own strengths, which solidifies the team as a whole.

Joppatowne

Head coach: Kaitlyn Larrimore (fifth season)

2018 record: 2-10

Top returning players: Mallorie Hunt, Senior (Mid); Natalie Hunt, Sophomore (Mid); Madison Brown, Sophomore (GK)

Key new players: Carley Slunt, Senior (Mid); Layce Hartsell, Freshman (Mid)

Outlook: “We hope to improve upon last year’s record,” Mariners coach Larrimore said. “We are a very young team and have a strong focus on fitness and stick skills this season.”

North Harford

Head coach: Patty Murdy (second season)

2018 record: 6-10

Top returning players: Brenna Duley, Senior (Att); Casey DiVenti, Junior (Mid); Lauryn Warfield, Sophomore (Mid); Brooke Ciampaglio, Senior (Def); Kaleigh Sasdelli, Senior (GK); Tori Gay, Junior (Mid/Att); Meridith Price, Junior (Mid); Lily MaCatee, Sophomore (Mid); Lexi Coldiron, Junior (GK); Caroline King, Senior (Def/Mid); Anna Racine, Senior (Att); Julia Barstow, Senior (Mid)

Outlook: North Harford girls lacrosse is looking at a promising 2019 season. “While we lost four starters and two more are currently injured, there are a lot of talented players to fill positions lost. We have two strong returning goalies (Sasdelli and Coldiron) and a strong defense lead by seniors,” Hawks coach Murdy said. “With 18 returning varsity players we plan to build on our strengths from last season to make this an extremely competitive and rewarding season for the Lady Hawks.”

Patterson Mill

Head coach: Kim Burgasser (third season)

2018 record: 16-8

Top returning players: Elise Alders, Senior (Att); Sydney Beck, Semior (Att); Kate Springer, Senior (Att); Anna Salerno, Sophomore (Att); Beth Bruck, Senior (Mid); Michaela Reid, Junior (Def); Faith Treptow, Senior (GK)

Key new players: Madison Dawson, Sophomore (Mid); Mikaela Truong, Sophomore (Mid)

Outlook: “We are excited for another great year. The girls have been working really hard and they continue to get better each day individually and as a team,” Huskies coach Burgasser said. “We look forward to getting the season started with some competitive games. Our ultimate goal is to get back to the state championship game in May.”
