It was my privilege to work with Superintendent Barbara Canavan when she embarked on her leadership career in the Harford County school system. I was the principal of Edgewood Middle School and she was appointed as my assistant principal. Her character became evident immediately as events called for loyalty, professionalism, caring about students and long hours devoted to the hard work needed to run a school.
Communication skills and the ability to inspire staff and students to embrace a vision for a better outcome ranked high on her list of strengths. Her input helped to solve problems on several occasions. She was pleasant and enjoyable as a working partner.
I have followed Mrs. Canavan's advancing career as the principal of Southampton Middle School and as superintendent of Harford County Public Schools and I am impressed by the fine job that I believe she has done. She has earned her retirement. I wish her well.
My respect for the Harford County school system is unwavering and it is my hope that the next superintendent continues in its vision of educating and inspiring our youth, our future leaders.
