SARC hosts Family Fun Day Saturday at Ripken Stadium

SARC's 5th Annual Rising Above It Family Fun Day takes place rain or shine Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ripken Stadium, 873 Long Drive in Aberdeen.

Family Fun Day is a fundraiser for SARC, a Harford County nonprofit that provides hope and resources to victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, child abuse and stalking. SARC stands for Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center.

The day features a mix of activities for kids as well as adults. One of the day's highlights will be the opportunity for participants to run the bases on the field. In addition, if weather conditions are favorable, a hot-air balloon coordinated by Light Flight Hot Air Balloons Inc. will be inflated on the field later in the day.

Other activities include two live entertainment stages (including an acoustic stage), pony rides for children provided by Patti's Ponies (additional fee), moon bounces, face painting, games and more. Extreme Family Entertainment will be on hand to create balloon art for guests. Jean Extreme will conduct a live, interactive, hands-on science show starting at 3 p.m.

New this year will be the addition of Wildlife Adventures, bringing bunnies, hedgehogs, lizards, snakes and other animals that children can interact with from noon to 3 p.m.

The Oriole Bird will also be on hand from approximately 2 to 3 p.m. Other mascots scheduled to join in the day's festivities include the IronBirds' Ferrous and the Chick-fil-A cow.

Among the day's performers will be Move it! with Uncle Pete, Kinetic Youth Academy, Heckles Hoops and Hoppin' Hawks. Carmen Weddle will lead the always popular Zumba demonstration.

A shopping area will include crafts, toys, novelties, jewelry, beauty and makeup products and more. Food will be available for purchase featuring typical baseball fare as well as funnel cakes and treats from Rita's.

The event will also feature a raffle for a hot-air balloon ride, with three chances for $5.

As a new promotion this year, children ages 10 and under will get into Family Fun Day for free if they come dressed as their favorite character from "The Wizard of Oz." There will be an area with "Wizard of Oz"-themed decorations (including a Munchkin Land sign, yellow-brick road, cut-out of Dorothy and lollipops) that will be available for the kids to have their photo taken in a "pay what you can" format.

"The Wizard of Oz" theme at Family Fun Day continues the theme from the gala the night before, which is "Defying Gravity" from the musical "Wicked."

Tickets for Family Fun Day cost $5 per person (children 5 and under are free, regardless of whether they wear costumes) and may be purchased in advance online at http://www.sarc-maryland.org. Tickets may also be purchased at the gate. Pets are not permitted at Family Fun Day. Also, an ATM will be available on-site.
