No. 1: William R. Brody

William R. Brody, at left, stepped down at at Johns Hopkins University in 2009 after 13 years as president. That year, he made $3,821,886, according to the Chronicle, a 349 percent increase over the previous year. His was the second-highest salary listed in the publication's survey, though much of it came from his retirement account.
