Cousin of slain standout teen was killed on July 4, police confirm

A 34-year-old Baltimore man killed July 4 in Northwest Baltimore was a cousin of Michael Mayfield, the standout teen killed earlier this year.

Police confirmed that Matthew Drake, who was fatally shot in the 3200 block of Chelsea Terrace around 5 p.m. is a cousin of Mayfield, 17, who was fatally shot in April in the 2300 block of Lyndhurst Ave. That block is listed as Drake's address in recent court records.

Police Commissioner Anthony W. Batts said last month that Mayfield's killing may have been a case of mistaken identity. Police spokesman Lt. Eric Kowalczyk said Tuesday that detectives could not speculate on a motive for Drake's killing or whether Drake may have been the intended target in the April shooting. Both cases are unsolved.

"Clearly, the detectives are looking at connections between the two cases, but they're also exploring other potential motives," Kowalczyk said.

Drake had several previous drug-related convictions and gun arrests, court records show.

Mayfield was killed just days before he was to graduate from Edmondson Westside High School, where he was a talented baseball player and participated in the Junior ROTC program. He was also a youth mentor, and his death stunned the community.
