Man charged in drive-by shooting of bus driver

Police charged a West Baltimore man in the drive-by shooting death of a bus driver in Westport last week.

Kevin Barnell Carroll, 34, of the 700 block of Cherry Blossom Way in Poppleton, was arrested Saturday and charged with first-degree murder, along with several handgun and assault violations, according to police and online court records.

Maryland Transit Administration bus driver Craig Ray Jr. was found shot in the back early Monday in the 2400 block of Wilgrey Court, near his girlfriend's home. Ray, 34, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead about an hour later.

Police believe the shooting stemmed from an argument, spokesman Det. Jeremy Silbert said.

Ray's mother, Deborah Ray, said she believed the shooting was retribution for a call her son had made to police earlier that week complaining of loud music at a home nearby.

Carroll is scheduled to appear in District Court for Baltimore City for a preliminary hearing on the charges April 1.
