Two shot, one dead, Monday night

Baltimore police are investigating two shootings Monday night that killed a man and critically wounded another.

At 8:30 p.m. in East Baltimore, police investigated a shooting in the 2800 block of E. Eager St., where they found a man with a gunshot wound to his head. He was transported to an area hospital and was listed in critical condition on Tuesday.

Detectives believe he was shot on his way to a neighborhood store a block away from where he was found. Police have no suspects.

Fifteen minutes after the man was found, officers responded to the 1500 block of Pennsylvania Ave. in the Upton neighborhood where they found a man shot multiple times. An hour and a half later, doctors pronounced him dead at an area hospital. Homicide detectives are investigating and believe the victim had been in a home when he stepped outside briefly and was shot.

The city's last two homicides have occurred in the police's Central district including a 19-year-old man fatally stabbed Sunday in the 400 block of E. Baltimore St. Thirty one homicides have occurred in the city this year, a nearly 41 percent increase in murders compared with the same time last year.

In response, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake on Monday announced that police will be expanding the number of enforcement zones that officers will patrol heavily. The city is also planning to open a number of 24-hour curfew centers that Rawlings-Blake hopes will curb violence, as well.

Police are asking anyone with information on Monday's fatal shooting to call the Homicide Unit at 410-396-2100.
