Police investigate Highlandtown bank robbery

A morning bank robbery and the ensuing search for suspects in the area shut down a stretch of Pratt Street on Friday.

Police said that two men robbed at gunpoint the Hopkins Federal Savings Bank at the corner of East Pratt and South Eaton streets at about 8:30 a.m. No one was reported injured and the suspects fled on foot.

Police received a tip that the suspects were inside a nearby apartment building, and officers shut down the area and called in the SWAT team. At 1 p.m., officers were still searching the rooftops of homes on the street with the help of a city fire truck, as the helicopter unit swirled overhead.

Lt. Eric Kowalczyk, a police spokesman, said the suspects could not be located.

Police said they were investigating the robbery along with the FBI's Robber Joint Task Force.

Anyone with information was asked to call Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP.

There were 98 bank robberies in Maryland through Oct. 11 this year, compared to 86 such robberies for all of 2012 and 159 in 2011, ABC-2 reported last month.
