Police in Arundel vote no confidence in chief; other crime news around region

The big news of the day is in the city, with a police officer suspended after detectives found a gun used to kill a child in his car. But headlines are being made on a wide variety of fronts today, from Cecil County to Annapolis.

In Anne Arundel County, police officers voted no confidence in Chief James Teare Sr. and County Executive John R. Leopold, who was indicted last week on charges that he used his police protective force to steal campaign signs, help him in an affair and change his urgine bag following back surgery.

The charges listed in the state prosecutor's case are scandalous (read indictment here), and Teare was not charged with any crime. But the indictment alleges that officers complained to their chief about Leopold and nothing was done, raising questions about his leadership.

In Annapolis, The Sun's Justin Fenton reports: Gov. Martin O'Malleyis taking steps to grant clemency to two Maryland inmates serving life sentences, including a Baltimore man convicted of murder at age 14 — the first time he has proceeded that far on such an action. Read the complete story here.

In Cecil County, two abortion doctors charged with murder for allegedly prematurely aborting fetuses saw all their charges dropped on Tuesday. Prosecutors said experts conflicted with the initial investigative findings.

The case had many twists and turns over the past several months -- abortion rights groups distanced themselves from the doctors, calling their practices outside the mainstream, while the defendants called the charges a prosecutor's challenge to legal abortion. Read the story along with previous articles on the complicated case.

On the gun front, legal experts tell Sun reporter Tricia Bishop that a federal judge's ruling striking down part of the state's restrictive rules governing handgun permits should withstand appeal by the Attorney General's Office. Read the ruling here.
