Balto. Co. officers involved in fatal shooting identified

Balto. Co. police release last names of 3 officers involved in fatal shooting.

Baltimore County police have released the last names of the three officers involved in a fatal shooting Monday in Bowleys Quarters.

The officers are identified as Officer Canup, Officer Pfadenhauer and Officer Spahn. The department does not release first names of officers involved in shootings because of an agreement with the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 4.

According to the department, the officers responded to the 4000 block of Bay Drive on Monday morning on a call about an attempted suicide. A woman had called 911 saying her boyfriend, 52-year-old Jeffrey Gene Evans, had taken a large amount of pills.

Police said all three officers opened fire on Evans when he advanced at them with kitchen knives. They said police tried to use a Taser on him twice before the officers shot at him.

Evans was pronounced dead at the scene.

The three officers are assigned to the Essex precinct. Canup has been with the department for eight years; Pfadenhauer for 13 years; and Spahn for 14 years.

None have been involved in previous shootings, the department said. They were placed on administrative status while the shooting is investigated.
