2 double shootings Sunday bring end to violent month

Two men were shot in a hail of gunfire in West Baltimore, the second double shooting in the city Sunday.

Shattered glass from the windows of a silver minivan and dozens of police evidence markers littered a West Baltimore street where police said at least two men were shot in a hail of bullets, the second double shooting in the city Sunday.

The shooting brought to an end one of the most violent months the city has seen in decades, with 43 people killed and 108 people injured in May alone. More people have been shot to death this month than any month since August 1972, when 45 people were killed.

Officers were called at 9:17 p.m. to the first block of N. Gilmor St., where they found the minivan with windows shot out. A short time later, two men walked into a local hospital with gunshot wounds. Police said one victim was shot in the hand and the other was shot multiple times in the legs.

Crime scene technicians and detectives at the scene could be heard tallying the number of spent bullet casings on the ground. The count reached at least 30, growing so high they ran out of evidence markers and began to use small orange traffic cones. Detectives knocked on doors and shined flashlights down alleys as they searched the scene.

In the other double shooting Sunday, two men were shot, one of them fatally, on the city's east side in the 1900 block of Collington Ave. in South Clifton Park in the late morning. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:37 a.m.; the other's condition was not available.

No information was released on any suspect or motives. Police are investigating both shootings, and anyone with information may call the Western District at 410-396-2477 or the homicide unit at 410-396-2100.
