Union Bridge man killed in Jessup prison; fellow inmate suspected

Maryland State Police say charges are pending against an inmate at the Jessup Correctional Institution in the death of another inmate.

David I. Stephenson, 44, was pronounced dead at the prison Friday morning after being found inside his cell around 3 a.m. suffering from “obvious trauma.” A correctional officer making checks saw a window to a cell was covered up, and made entry with additional officers who found Stevenson on the floor.

Police said a suspect, a fellow inmate, has been identified, but withheld his name until charges are filed.

Stephenson, of Union Bridge, was serving a 20-year sentence for a conviction on charges of sexual abuse of a minor in 2010. Stephenson had led a Maryland sign language interpreting business, and was found to have been sexually abusing two boys over several months and years, according to the Frederick News-Post.

Police said that an autopsy was scheduled to determine the cause and manner of death, and a motive for the killing was unclear.
