Winters Mill student places second in art show

Winters Mill High School student Meredith Mercer recently won second place in the sixth annual Reginald F. Lewis Museum High School Juried Art Show sponsored by the museum, the Maryland State Education Association, and the Maryland State Department of Education.

Mercer's artwork is a mixed media collage that features a charcoal drawing with a copy of a speech by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. serving as a background.

The theme of this year's show is "Dr. Martin Luther King's Legacy: Have We Progressed?"

Mercer received a cash prize of $200 for placing second.

Mercer's artwork and works from other students will be exhibited at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in Baltimore from Jan. 12 through March 2. The exhibition will then travel to the Maryland State Department of Education for exhibit from March 17 through April 18.

The winners will also be featured in the museum's publication, "Journeys," as well as the brochure for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration.
