Police say 12-year-old shined laser light at medevac helicopter near Mount Airy

Maryland State Police say they and federal authorities are investigating a 12-year-old boy who allegedly shined a laser light at a state police helicopter on Sunday night near the Carroll and Howard county line.

Police said the helicopter, based in Frederick, was returning from a medevac mission when, in the vicinity of MD Route 27 and MD Route 144 near Mount Airy, a green flash illuminated the cockpit of the aircraft.

Police said three more flashes, consistent with that of a laser pointer, were detected.

The crew was able to determine the residence the laser originated from and contacted state police. Troopers determined a 12-year-old male had shined a green, hand held astronomy laser at the aircraft.

Police noted that targeting an aircraft with a laser is a state and federal crime punishable by fines and jail time. Officials said an investigation is being handled by police and federal authorities.

Officials said laser illumination in a cockpit can cause temporary visual impairment for pilots and crew and can create a hazardous situation.
