Holiday of Trees: Locals rally around Taneytown Heritage and Museum Association fundraiser

The halls of the New Windsor State Bank in Taneytown have been thoroughly decked with more than 30 trees, wreaths and centerpieces.

The abundance of baubles comes as part of the annual Holiday of Trees, Wreaths & Centerpieces celebration to benefit the Taneytown Heritage and Museum Association, and they will be on display until Dec. 15 at the bank, 222 E Baltimore St.

Over the years, the event has grown to encompass a decorating contest for trees, wreaths and centerpieces, a silent auction and a holiday celebration.

Visitors can bid on the pieces during the silent auction for the chance to decorate their own homes. They can also cast votes for their favorites for as little as one penny by placing change in donation jars next to each item.

There will also be a 50/50 cash raffle, with tickets available at the bank or through association members.

Fairy Flickinger, chairwoman of the event for the sixth year, said the raffle was one of the most lucrative fundraisers for the museum, a 501(c)3 nonprofit that is sustained entirely by donations.

A 10-person committee worked to organize the holiday event with the help of the bank and the community organizations that sent in entries for the silent auction.

Some entered unique creations this year, like the Silver Fancy Garden Club who contributed a coordinating tree, wreath and centerpiece or the matching wreath and centerpiece from the Buttersburg Inn.

One submission needed its own category all together. The decoration made of ornaments and pine branches, donated by Crouse Ford Sales, would look lovely over a doorway, Flickinger said.

“They’re all very different, and they’re all very lovely,” she said of the submissions this year.

The bank and the heritage association have been partners in the fundraiser ever since the event outgrew its former home and the bank volunteered their Taneytown branch.

They have been “very gracious to have us there and help in any way they can. We’re very grateful. It’s a nice setting and there’s plenty of parking,” Flickinger said

Volunteers from the association will be at the bank from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The bank is closed on Sunday.

Public viewing, voting and silent auction hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Voting and the silent auction conclude at 11 a.m. Dec. 15. Awards will be presented and raffle prize winners will be drawn. Winning bidders must then pick up their purchases between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
