Sykesville man seriously hurt after boating accident in Ocean City

A Sykesville man was seriously injured after he jumped off the bow of a 22-foot rental boat and was then run over by the vessel on Isle of Wight Bay in Ocean City Monday, police said.

John Scott Hauf, 26, had lacerations to his left shoulder, neck and head from the boat's propeller.

Hauf was transported to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury in critical condition, and then later taken Maryland Shock Trauma. He was listed in stable condition Tuesday.

The operator of the boat failed a field sobriety test, police said. Charges are pending.

Separately, later in the evening, police launched a search for Baltimore resident Michael Paul Birchfield, 48, who was last seen in the waters of Back River near Cox's Point in Essex on a 26-foot boat.

The boat was found on the banks of Cox Point, but officers could not locate Birchfield after an air and water search. Investigators believe he may have fallen overboard.

It is unknown if he was alone.

Birchfield is a 48-year-old white man who is 5-feet-7 inches tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes, and was wearing a light gray t-shirt and brown shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 410-260-8888.
