Pedestrian, 79, struck by car in Columbia; critically injured

A 79-year-old man was critically injured Friday afternoon when he was struck by a car while walking in Columbia, Howard County Police said.

Yechao Qian of the 7000 block of Cradlerock Way in Columbia was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center after being struck by a car just before 5 p.m., police said.

A 2004 Honda Civic was westbound on Cradlerock Way at Dockside Lane when it struck Qian, police said. The driver, who remained at the scene and was not injured, is Kelly Lynn Weir, 47, of the 5400 block of Hildebrand Court in Columbia, police said.

Pfc. Nick Bingham of the Traffic Enforcement Section is investigating and the cause of the collision had not been determined Friday night; police asked any witnesses to contact the section. Police closed Cradlerock Way at the Owen Brown Village Center until 7 p.m. for their investigation.
