Eck to oversee Baltimore Sun Media Group's community newspapers

“I am a strong believer that there is a need for local community news.”

Elizabeth Eck has been named assistant managing editor of Targeted Media, the Baltimore Sun Media Group announced.

She succeeds Paul Milton, who was promoted to editor of the BSMG-owned Carroll County Times.

Eck will oversee BSMG's portfolio of community newspapers, including The Aegis, Towson Times, Arbutus Times, Baltimore Messenger, Carroll Eagle, Catonsville Times, Columbia Flier, Howard County Times, The Jeffersonian, Laurel Leader, The Record, North County News, Northeast Booster/Reporter and the Owings Mills Times.

Eck, a 27-year veteran of the company, has been a copy editor, a staff writer and editor, and in 2008 was named senior editor of the Baltimore County community newspapers. She has won numerous awards from Suburban Newspapers of America, the Society of Professional Journalists' Maryland Chapter and the Maryland/Delaware/D.C. Press Association.

"Elizabeth's experience and commitment to local news makes her the right choice to continue to enhance our local coverage and provide our communities with the news that is important to them," said Triffon G. Alatzas, senior vice president and executive editor for BSMG.

"I am a strong believer that there is a need for local community news," said Eck. "I am excited about this new opportunity and look forward to continuing the extensive quality coverage our readers have come to expect."

Eck graduated from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and holds a master's degree in journalism/public affairs from American University in Washington.
