Two firefighters, a police officer and a marine rescue volunteer – all of whom died over the past year -- will be honored Friday when Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium hosts its 29th annual Fallen Heroes Day commemoration.
The 1 p.m. ceremony honors those whose deaths have been declared "line of duty" since May 2013. The event salutes police and correctional officers, firefighters, emergency medical and rescue personnel in Maryland. Those being remembered are:
Firefighter/EMT Gene Kirchner of the Reisterstown Volunteer Fire Company, who died on May 2, 2013, eight days after he was critically injured while fighting a house fire and attempting to rescue a resident of the building.
Officer Jason Schneider of the Baltimore County Police Department, who died n Aug. 28, 2013, while serving a warrant in Catonsville.
Fire Police Captain David Barr Jr., of the Community Fire Company of Perryville, who died Nov. 7, 2013, from injuries he suffered when a vehicle struck him as he was directing traffic at an accident scene.
Lt. James D. Brooks Sr. of the Prince George’s County Volunteer Marine Fire Rescue, who died Jan. 15, 2014, of cardiac arrest suffered while securing boats in preparation for predicted extreme temperatures.
Kirchner and Schneider are buried at the Fallen Heroes Memorial.
Officials including Gov. Martin O'Malley and Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz will give addresses at the ceremony, and Gladys Falkenhan, widow of the late Baltimore County Firefighter Mark Gray Falkenhan, will also speak. Falkenhan was honored in 2011.
Others taking part in the event include WPOC Radio Host Laurie DeYoung and Mary Beth Marsden of WBAL Radio.
The Fallen Heroes Memorial is located within Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens, 200 East Padonia Road, Timonium, MD 21093. The observance is free and open to the public.
