Fatal police-involved shooting reported in Woodlawn

One person was killed and two others injured in two separate police-involved shootings that took place hours apart Tuesday in Baltimore County and Baltimore City.

In the first incident, Baltimore County police were called to the 5400 block of Dogwood Road in the Woodlawn area about 4:20 p.m. after a homeowner reported a burglary, said spokesman Cpl. John Wachter. Police saw two people run out of the house and get in a green minivan parked outside.

As one of three officers at the scene reached into the van to stop it from moving, the driver grabbed the officer's arm and tried to drag him along with the moving car, Wachter said. "Fearing for his life," Wachter said, the officer fired into the van, and two other officers there for backup did so as well. The driver later died at a hospital, Wachter said, but the condition of the passenger was not known Tuesday evening. A third person who fled in a different direction was later apprehended by a canine unit, Wachter said. All three suspects are male, police said, but it was not immediately known whether they were adults or juveniles.

The officer who was dragged suffered minor injuries, Wachter said. Stolen property believed to be from the home was found amid the shell casings littering Dogwood Road, police said. No weapons were immediately found. The officers were placed on routine administrative duty pending an investigation, and their names will be released in two days.

Michael Jones Sr., a neighbor of the homeowner who reported the burglary, said he was outside mowing his lawn when the shooting happened. Jones said the van tried to flee but was hampered by another car parked in front of it. He said he did not see everything that happened inside the car and did not want to second-guess the officers' actions.

"I was stunned and shocked to see something like that before my own eyes," said Jones, who compared it to a violent movie scene.

At about 7 p.m., a second police-involved shooting happened a few miles away. City police released few details on the incident on Tuesday night.

Baltimore police officers were driving through the 3400 block of Old Frederick Road in the southwest part of the city when they stopped after witnessing what they suspected was a drug deal, according to Lt. Col. Cliff McWhite. The officers, in plainclothes and ballistic vests identifying them as police, chased one of the suspects, who appeared to have a weapon, then shot the man several times, McWhite said. The man was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where his condition was not released on Tuesday night.

In an unrelated incident, a man was shot in the back in Northeast Baltimore about 7:40 p.m., police said. Further information on the shooting, which happened in the 3300 block of Dudley Ave., was not immediately available.

This is not the first fatal police-involved shooting in Baltimore County this year. Last month, an officer shot and killed a Cockeysville man when responding to an assault call. In that case, officers said they confront the man, who had a knife and refused to drop it. There have been about 10 police-involved shootings in Baltimore City this year, with two people killed.
