Animal activities aid Finksburg's Misfits sanctuary

Two upcoming events — both of them outside Carroll County — will benefit the Finksburg-based Misfits Animal Sanctuary.

Misfits works to provide a sanctuary for abused and neglected animals, finding homes through adoption and connecting people to animals through educational programs.

On Sept. 15, the Timber Ridge Pet Resort, at 17110 Ridge Road, Upperco, will host a Responsible Pet Ownership Day on Saturday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Pets and owners are invited, and activities will include agility trials, a pet parade of rescued animals and a Halloween pet costume contest.

A 50/50 raffle will benefit the Misfits Animal Sanctuary. In addition, Misfits will accept monetary donations or donations of animal care items. A wish list of needed items is available at Monetary donations can be made online or by donating to P.O. Box 75, Finksburg, MD 21048.

Also at the Timber Ridge event, a veterinarian will be on hand to perform hearing tests, as well as administer low cost rabies vaccinations and services related to microchip tagging of pets. There will be vendors, as well as information tables for therapy dogs, a German shepherd rescue group and others.

Then, on Sept. 27, 7 to 9 p.m., animal researchers Diana Reiss and Irene Pepperberg will present "Exploring Animal Minds," at Johns Hopkins University's Zayed Tower, 1800 Orleans St., Baltimore, with proceeds also aiding Misfits Animal Sanctuary.

Two lectures will be presented. "The ALEX Project" will discuss the Avian Learning Experiment (ALEX), which led Pepperberg to conclude that some birds' intelligence is on a par with that of dolphins and apes. Her book, "Alex & Me," was a New York Times best seller.

The second lecture, "Dolphin in the Mirror," discusses Reiss' book of the same name, as well as her research on marine mammal cognition and communication.

Tickets are $25 and can be purchased on Misfits website or by mailing to the sanctuary's address. No physical ticket required, names will be placed on a list.
