Firefighter taken to hospital after falling from 2nd-floor window

One firefighter was in serious condition after falling from a second-story window at an apartment fire in Northwest Baltimore late Wednesday.

The firefighter, who also had burns to both hands, was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center, said Chief Kevin Cartwright, a department spokesman. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Two residents were also injured during the fire in Dorchester.

An elderly woman suffered from burns and smoke inhalation; she was taken to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. A young woman was also taken to Bayview for a mild case of smoke inhalation, Cartwright said.

The fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. in an apartment in the 3900 block of Liberty Heights Ave., he said. The building has at least 12 units, but Cartwright could not say how many people were displaced. He said about four apartments had smoke and fire damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Cartwright said.
