An off-duty Baltimore police officer was struck by a car on the northbound side of Interstate 83 while assisting drivers involved in another crash Monday morning, the police department said.
The officer was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center with a non-life-threatening injury to her knee, police spokeswoman Det. Chakia Fennoy said. The officer is in fair condition.
The accident shut down the northbound side of the Jones Falls Expressway on Monday morning.
At about 7:15 a.m., an off-duty officer stopped to assist other drivers who had been involved in an accident near the Northern Parkway exit, Fennoy said. As she was helping them, she was struck by another car, Fennoy said.
It’s not clear whether the officer was outside or inside her car — a personal vehicle — when she was hit, Fennoy said.
