Drug dealer who killed man in car crash gets 15-year sentence

A 40-year-old Baltimore man who crashed his Acura into an elderly driver's car while fleeing police last year was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in federal prison for dealing heroin after drugs were discovered in his abandoned car.

Umar Burley also pleaded guilty in Baltimore Circuit Court this month to vehicular manslaughter in connection with the Northwest Baltimore crash, which killed 86-year-old Elbert Davis, the father of a police officer. Burley was sentenced to a 15-year term in that case as well, to run concurrently with the federal sentence, according to his plea deal.

A 37-year-old passenger riding with him at the time of the crash, Brent Matthews, also pleaded guilty to heroin distribution and is scheduled for sentencing in U.S. District Court next month, the Maryland U.S. Attorney's Office said. Burley was on the streets at the time of the crash because he had beaten federal gun charges, a rare exception.
