A first

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta congratulates Kevin Hillery, who became partially paralyzed while attending the United States Naval Academy, but persevered and became the first paraplegic to graduate from the Academy. Hillery was paralyzed in an accident while biking in Virginia in April 2011: A tree fell on him. He graduated with a degree but was not commissioned and will not serve in the Navy. There were 1099 graduates at the 2012 Graduation and Commissioning Ceremony.
