Term: 1999 to 2007 Martin O'Malley was the youngest mayor to be elected in Baltimore history when he moved to City Hall in 1999. Earlier, he had served in the City Council from 1991 to 1999. The University of Maryland Law School graduate was assistant state's attorney for Baltimore from 1988 to 1990. During his two administrations, O'Malley fought to reduce the city's crime rate, improve school test scores and helped generate a $350 million budget surplus, the first in years. In addition to his mayoral duties, O'Malley plays guitar and is a vocalist in the Celtic rock band, O'Malley's March, which in 2012 performed for President Barack Obama at the White House. Considered a rising national political star, in 2005 O'Malley was named by Esquire Magazine as the "Best Young Mayor in the Country," and that same year, he was named one of the nation's "Top 5 Big City Mayors." Since 2007, he has been governor of Maryland.
