Passenger dies after July 1 collision in Pasadena

A passenger of a vehicle involved in a July 1 collision in Pasadena died on Sunday from injuries sustained in the accident, said Anne Arundel County Police in a prepared statement on Tuesday.

Police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said that on July 1 at 5:35 p.m., officers responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Fort Smallwood Road near Hog Neck Road in Pasadena and found a 1996 Saturn and a 1999 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck blocking travel lanes.

Mulcahy said that a preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the Saturn, Kimberly Jo Blackwell, 43, of Pasadena was traveling west on Fort Smallwood Road when she made an abrupt left turn while attempting to make a U-turn. The Saturn struck a side of the pickup truck, which rotated clockwise and overturned, Mulcahy said.

The passenger of the pickup truck, John Gilbert Szuba, 87, of Pasadena was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma with serious injuries and died on Sunday, Mulchahy said. Both Blackwell and the pickup truck driver, Patricia Joanne Cowan, 53, of Pasadena, were transported to Baltimore Medical Center with minor injuries.

Mulcahy said the preliminary investigation indicated that neither speed nor alcohol was a contributing factor in the accident.
