Police identify suspect who drowned in stormwater pond

Anne Arundel County Police have identified the man whose body was recovered from a pond near Arundel Mills in Hanover Tuesday morning. Police said the man was an accused shoplifter who had run from security at the mall and jumped into the nearby pond.

He was identified as Tavon Talley, 26, of Baltimore. Police said the Office of The Chief Medical Examiner completed an examination and autopsy of Talley and found the cause of death appears to be drowning, pending toxicology results.

Police also said a second person who was with Talley at the time of the incident, Tania D. Turner, 26, of Baltimore, was charged with theft under $1,000 for her role in the incident.

Police had previously reported that a man fled the mall on foot after being pursued by mall security officers for suspicion of shoplifting. Mall security officials saw him enter the three-acre stormwater pond and begin swimming.

Police said he dove head first down into the pond but did not resurface. His body was later recovered underwater in the middle of the pond.
