Annapolis shooting victim opened fire 1st, police say

An Annapolis teenager who suffered a gunshot wound to the foot in January had previously attempted to shoot his alleged assailant but missed, police said.

And despite not hitting his target, he currently faces more serious charges than the other accused gunman.

Devonte Simms, 19, was charged Friday with attempted murder, assault and weapons offenses, among other counts. He is being held in jail without bond. Craig Ireland, 19, meanwhile, only faces assault and weapons charges.

Police say that on the evening of Jan. 13 Simms and Ireland got into an argument. Simms pulled a gun and tried to shoot Ireland, according to police. He missed and Ireland fled, only to come back later to the 700 block of Newtowne Drive and shoot Simms in the ankle, police said.

Annapolis police spokesman Cpl. Amy Miguez said the charges against Ireland had been reviewed by the State's Attorney's Office, while those against Simms had not and could change.
